Senior / Lead Backend Engineer – Node.js & Integrations

About the role

We're looking for a Senior / Lead Backend Engineer to take technical ownership of backend services and integrations in a highly integration-heavy environment.

You'll be hands-on building and maintaining APIs, background workers, and integrations, while also helping drive technical decisions, establish good engineering practices, unblock the team, and mentor other engineers.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex backend problems end-to-end and can move comfortably between implementation and technical leadership. You'll be expected to understand how systems interact, trace data flows across multiple services, investigate production issues, and make pragmatic decisions around architecture, reliability, and scalability.

You'll work primarily with TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, MongoDB, Redis, GCP, and Docker.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using TypeScript, Node.js, and NestJS.
  • Take technical ownership of backend services, APIs, integrations, and background processing workflows.
  • Drive and contribute to technical decisions, architecture discussions, and engineering standards.
  • Build and maintain REST APIs, webhooks, and system integrations.
  • Develop and support asynchronous workflows, background workers, queues, and job-processing systems.
  • Work with MongoDB and Mongoose for data modeling, persistence, and querying.
  • Use Redis and Bull for caching, queues, and background job processing.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot complex issues by tracing data flows across multiple systems.
  • Help unblock engineers by providing technical guidance, reviewing solutions, and sharing best practices.
  • Contribute to CI/CD, Docker, and GCP-based deployments.
  • Implement and maintain authentication and authorization using OAuth2/JWT patterns.
  • Balance technical quality, scalability, maintainability, and delivery needs when making engineering decisions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and engineers to communicate technical tradeoffs and drive solutions forward.

Requirements

  • Strong professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Solid experience with NestJS or a comparable Node.js backend framework.
  • Production experience with MongoDB/Mongoose and Redis.
  • Hands-on experience building and consuming REST APIs and webhook-driven architectures.
  • Strong understanding of OAuth2/JWT authentication patterns.
  • Experience with CI/CD, Docker, and cloud-based deployments.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across distributed or integration-heavy systems.
  • Proven ability to take technical ownership of backend services and drive solutions from problem definition through implementation.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing technical solutions, or providing technical direction.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to clearly explain technical decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively navigate ambiguity and competing priorities.

Nice to have

  • Experience integrating with Salesforce APIs, including REST and SOQL.
  • Experience working with multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
  • Background in automotive or dealership technology.
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform, particularly Cloud Run and Cloud SQL.
  • Previous experience acting as a Tech Lead or technical point of reference for a backend team.
