AI/ML Engineering Lead

Sobre la empresa

Our client is an EdTech company building an AI-powered math co-teacher for K-12 schools. Its platform automatically analyzes students' handwritten math work to identify individual learning gaps and misconceptions, then delivers tailored, actionable instructional recommendations to teachers. With a strong focus on Special Education, the platform helps educators align daily instruction with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. By capturing insights at the class, school, and district level, the company supports more equitable math instruction and empowers teachers, including those who aren't math specialists, to grow professionally and stay in the classroom. It's a mission-driven team using AI to make a measurable difference in how students learn.

Sobre el rol

We’re looking for a hands-on AI/ML Engineering Lead to own the technical direction and execution of an AI platform that analyzes handwritten student work and provides teachers with actionable, personalized insights.

This is the company's primary engineering leadership role, combining hands-on ML/AI development, production ownership, technical leadership, and external engineering coordination. You’ll own the AI/ML roadmap and take models from experimentation and proof-of-concept through deployment and continuous improvement.

The role is particularly suited for someone who has built original AI/ML models, worked with real-world datasets, independently experimented with model approaches, and has experience operating those models in production. This is not an API-integration role: you’ll be expected to work directly with the underlying models and AI systems.

Responsabilidades

  • Own and improve the company's AI/ML model pipeline, including computer vision, NLP, and multimodal AI systems for analyzing handwritten student work.
  • Build and experiment with original AI/ML models, datasets, and approaches to solve complex real-world problems.
  • Take AI/ML proof-of-concepts through production deployment, including inference, monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
  • Expand the platform beyond mathematics into additional subjects such as ELA and science.
  • Audit and strengthen evaluation datasets and establish reliable approaches for measuring model performance.
  • Improve model monitoring, observability, and performance tracking across production systems.
  • Work with cloud infrastructure and MLOps tooling to deploy and operate in-house models at scale.
  • Collaborate closely with the external full-stack engineering team in Bulgaria, translating priorities, driving technical quality, and maintaining alignment.
  • Manage external engineering contractors and/or vendors when needed.
  • Own and shape the AI/ML technical roadmap based on product and business priorities.
  • Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, roadmap, risks, and progress clearly to the CEO, board members, grantors, and other non-technical stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the platform's AI capabilities and expand its impact across new subjects, grade levels, and use cases.

Requisitos

  • 4–8 years of professional experience in ML/AI development.
  • Hands-on experience building AI/ML products end-to-end, from proof-of-concept through production deployment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing in-house AI/ML models, rather than only integrating third-party AI APIs.
  • Experience with model development, dataset creation, and independent experimentation.
  • Experience deploying models, running inference, and supporting AI systems in production.
  • Strong understanding of MLOps and cloud infrastructure, ideally with AWS, Google Cloud, and/or Modal.
  • Experience integrating and working with LLMs as part of AI products.
  • Experience managing or coordinating external engineering contractors or vendors.
  • Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to translate complex AI/ML concepts and technical roadmaps for non-technical leadership and external partners.
  • Strong ownership, autonomy, and ability to operate effectively in a small, fast-moving startup environment.
  • Ability to work US time zones.
  • Must have valid work authorization in your country of residence
  • visa sponsorship is not available.

Deseables

  • Experience working at an EdTech company or educational technology startup.
  • Experience in social impact sectors, particularly education, healthcare, or environmental technology.
  • Experience working with handwritten documents, computer vision, OCR, NLP, or multimodal AI.
  • Experience taking AI research or experimental models into reliable production systems.
  • Experience working in an early-stage startup or as a founding engineer/founder.

Beneficios

  • Mission-driven AI work with real impact: Build AI that analyzes handwritten student math work and helps teachers identify exactly where students are struggling, supporting more equitable and personalized instruction.
  • Frontier ML work: Work on original models across computer vision, NLP, and multimodal AI rather than maintaining existing AI integrations.
  • Own the technical operation: This is the company's primary engineering leadership role, giving you significant ownership over the AI roadmap, technical direction, and path from POC to production.
  • Early-stage impact: Join a small, collaborative, mission-driven team where your technical decisions will directly shape the product and its impact.
  • Competitive compensation
  • Remote-first: Work remotely within the USA with a distributed team.
